Sustainability

Sustainable where it counts. Honest where it doesn't.

Surge started because plastic was piling up on the beaches Lukas grew up on. Today we make every format your stores run, in paper, fiber and plastic, and we help you choose the most sustainable option that actually works for each one.

What's paper, and what isn't.

We don't do greenwashing. Here's the catalog, sorted by material.

Paper and fiber

  • ✓Single- and double-wall paper hot cups
  • ✓Kraft coffee sleeves
  • ✓Paper straws, wrapped or bulk
  • ✓Birch wooden stirrers
  • ✓Paper to-go bags and pastry bags
  • ✓Custom printed napkins
  • ✓Sandwich, snack, pizza, and donut boxes
  • ✓Paper soup bowls
  • ✓Bagasse fiber clamshells
  • ✓Grease-proof wrapping paper

Still plastic (or foil)

  • ·Clear cold cups (PP)
  • ·Hot and cold cup lids
  • ·Plastic checkout bags, clear pastry bags, and ice bags
  • ·Plastic straws, for customers who require them
  • ·Foil wrap

Clear cold cups don't have a paper equivalent that holds up on a fountain drink. We'd rather sell you an honest cold cup than a paper one you'll regret.

In the portal

Impact you can report.

Every customer's portal counts the plastic items their paper orders replaced, all time and by quarter, with the weight, water, and landfill equivalents. Handy when someone asks what your packaging switch actually did.

Materials, plainly.

What it's made of

Paperboard, kraft paper, molded fiber (bagasse), and birch, depending on the item. Spec sheets are available for any SKU.

Coatings and linings

Hot cups use a thin lining to hold liquid. Grease-proof bags and wraps use PFAS-free papers. Ask about any item and we'll tell you exactly what's on it.

End-of-life

Uncoated paper items go in the recycling bin people already have. Lined cups and fiber containers depend on local facilities. Ask about a specific SKU and you'll get a straight answer.

What we don't claim

We won't tell you a coated cup is curbside-recyclable everywhere. We'll tell you where it is and where it isn't.

Progress over perfection.

We help chains switch to eco-friendly packaging wherever there's an option that performs just as well, so their customers never notice a drop in quality.

Where a better option doesn't exist yet, we fill the gap with the best product available and keep looking. Getting most of the way there today beats waiting for a perfect solution that never ships.

Switching from plastic?

Tell us what you ship and we'll show you the paper equivalent, or tell you if there isn't one yet.
